Early this week, I finished reading a book #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso. The book tells about her story becoming the founder, CEO, and creative director of Nasty Gal. She wrote about the struggles, desires, and ways to be a #Girlboss. It’s a wonderful book to start off the year and I recommend to anyone especially women who wants to be a badass while pursuing their dreams. Dream big with all you want. So here are some tips to be a #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso.
You are in charge of your life. So work hard for it.
“If you want something, you need to earnnnn it!”
When you dream of an extraordinary life, you need to put a ton of hard work. Put intentions and efforts in every single thing you do. Keep pushing forward and figure out how to achieve those dreams. Nothing will come knocking without you put in the work outside of your door. No one would pay you to do nothing. Because in the end, what you put up with will send you back the results.
Believe in yourself and stay positive.
“Believe that what you are doing will have positive results, it will even if it’s not immediately obvious.”
The truth about life, we all seek for a fast result, and it can be discouraging when nothing seems working. More worst when no one else will believe in you and support is totally out of the question. But never give up. When you get shit done, you will be surprised that there are multiple successes in each of your hard work. Know that in the end, everything will pay off. Load your thoughts with positivity and you will be surprised with the results. We are in control of our thoughts, so don’t let them control our lives.
Don’t get distracted by the unnecessary.
“The world is a place full of gluttonous distractions that kept us from discovering our true spiritual selves.”
Sometimes you need to make compromises or leave anything that might hold you back. Habits, lifestyle or even people in your life. Human is no doubt a creature who can easily get distracted. But always know yourself what and when to kick the unnecessary away. It’s already one step forward. You will thank yourself for avoiding to spend the rest of your life thinking about what you don’t want in your life.
No, you don’t need anyone’s approval. So stop caring what other people think.
“Dress for yourself, and it’s not shallow to put effort into how you look. I’m telling you that you don’t have to choose between smart and sexy. You can have both.”
Growing up, we are trained to do what we were told. To believe there’s only one way to success, and turning away means doomed. But that is not the case, learn to listen to your heart and recognize what you want. Don’t force yourself to do the things you ‘have to’ as your dream is not other to fulfill. If you only listen to those around you, you won’t be able to climb the ladder. Once you nailed that, you will have the freedom to chase your dream. It’s not your job to convince people what you believe in. Save the energy to yourself and stop obsessing about what others might think. Also, don’t ever get sway by people’s opinions.
Bold to take the risks.
“The risks are where breakthroughs happen, and big shifts take you to new places and create opportunities.”
One of the most important things in life is to be bold when taking risks. I know risks sound dangerous, yet the common way is not always the best. It can be the most intimidating step to take, and sometimes, it involves the imagination of failure. But even how uncomfortable that may sound, it’s also a way to find your true potential, what you are capable of.
Learn to see failure as an experiment.
“There are secret opportunities hidden inside every failure.”
Yes, failure will happen. And yes it’s hard to accept, but know that it’s not the end of the world. Understand plan can change and you might not nail it at first, but it’s you who needs to get back up and fight again. Here’s the trick, instead of feeling down, treat them as an experiment for a better product. That’s why I always believe everything happened for a reason. So whether they succeed or not, life is never about failure, but how you define them. So don’t get too attached to the results.
The world loves to tell you how difficult things are, and the world’s not exaggerating. But the real things are, you can’t have it all and nothing comes easy. You will make sacrifices and compromises, get let down and let other people down, fail and start over, pick up and continue when your own hearts get broken. But difficult doesn’t mean impossible, and out of the bajillions of things in this universe that you can’t control, what you can control is how hard you try and know when to pack it in.
Be financially smart.
“Money looks better in the bank than on your feet.”
How easy to spend than to save. It’s even tempting to buy luxury life and show everyone what we made out of. You can act like you have more than you had, but if it’s something that will burden you in the long run, you probably need to start to consider your decision to avoid paying for the stupid one later. It’s also true when she said, control your finances so you won’t find yourself stuck with jobs, relationships or places that you hate because you can’t afford to go elsewhere.
Be patient even if you have to start with a shitty job.
“You have to be willing to tolerate some shit you don’t like at least for a while. Most people don’t land on their dream job right out of the gate, which means we all need to start somewhere.”
Be realistic in your expectations. Especially the shitty job that you hate and making a not-so-amazing job in your life. Know that it might not be fulfilling or be the way you wanted, yet. Learn to bear the not-so-amazing job before heading to other directions that you love. Because at the end of the day, even a shitty job will teach you something about life.
Make something enjoyable. Bore is not a solution.
“To be, in a word, unborable…It is the key to modern life. If you are immune to boredom, there is literally nothing you cannot accomplish.” – David Foster Wallace.
Always look for something enjoyable in life. And I’m not talking about scrolling through your phone and give heart to someone or watching the tv shows to fill up the time. But to look for work that will spark your eyes while scream “This is love!”. There’s so much thing offered to us, you need to start looking and if you can’t find it, try to look harder.
“Be yourself, everyone else is already taken.”
Last but not least, the most important aspect of your life is to always stay true with your authentic self, the unique voice that only you have them. It will not be interesting if you are just a duplicate of another person. Being someone else will only carry you up to a certain level, and not for long until you surrender. Don’t lose yourself in the crowds but stand out among them without being ordinary. Also, who said you need someone’s validation to prove who you are. As long as you know yourself, be yourself, that’s good enough. Only then you will be able to make an impression.
And remember, before you expect people to like you, you first need to accept yourself. Confidence is more attractive than anything you could put on your body.
